High Blood Pressure, also known as hypertension, is a common health problem. It is caused by an increased pressure of blood flowing in the blood vessels of human body. High BP makes the blood to flow through the blood vessels with higher pressure than usual. If it is left untreated, it can lead to serious health problems such as heart attacks, brain strokes and many other diseases.

High BP develops over years and it remains unnoticed. Even if no symptoms are shown up, it can damage body organs such as the brain, kidneys, heart, etc. Hence, it is important to detect high BP at early stages.

How is Blood Pressure Measured?

Blood pressure is measured using two numbers namely:

  • Systolic blood pressure is the blood pressure in the arteries when the heart beats
  • Diastolic blood pressure is the pressure of blood in the arteries when the heart relaxes between the beats

When the blood pressure is around 120/80, it is considered as normal blood pressure. When the blood pressure is around 130/85, it is considered as stage 1. If the BP is 140/90 or higher, it is considered as stage 2. If the blood pressure is 180/110 or more, seek medical assistance immediately.

Causes of High BP

The exact reason for high BP is unknown. But, there are certain risk factors that can cause high BP, such as:

  • Smoking
  • Overweight or obesity
  • Alcohol consumption
  • Gene mutations inherited from parents or during ageing.
  • Kidney disease
  • Use of some drugs(like pain killers) for other diseases.
  • Thyroid disorders
  • Unhealthy lifestyle habits such as lack of exercise, poor diet etc.
  • Heart problems
  • Age
  • Use of more salt in food
  • Stress
  • Diabetes
  • Side effects of certain medications
  • Endocrine tumours

If the exact reason for high BP is identified as some other problem in the body, it is considered as secondary hypertension. If no identifiable cause, it is primary or essential hypertension. The most common cause of secondary hypertension is kidney disease.

Signs of High BP

High BP is a slow health disease. Most people do not experience any symptoms. It takes several years to reach a severe level of this condition so that the symptoms appear. However, the symptoms may be related to other health issues. Some of the common signs include:

  • Bleeding from nose
  • Headaches
  • Shortness of breath
  • Chest pain
  • Changes in vision
  • Dizziness

As mentioned earlier, the above-mentioned signs will appear only when the high BP issue has reached a serious or life-threatening condition. So, it is always advised to check your BP regularly after 40 years to identify it as early as possible.

Treatment for High BP

Patients with high BP are advised to change their lifestyle habits such as less intake of salt, eating a balanced diet containing more of fresh fruits and vegetables, avoiding alcohol consumption, maintaining a healthy weight, quitting smoking, physical exercise, etc.

The medicines used for treating the condition are based on the readings of BP and your chances of developing other life-threatening conditions. If your doctor identifies the underlying reason for high BP, your doctor focuses on treating the underlying cause.
